Last year, when Mayor of Abingdon, I chose Reducing the Risk as the charity I wished to support because I firmly believe we all need to do more to address the hideous and often silent impact of domestic abuse. It is so alarmingly prevalent in all our communities, yet is never talked about enough or addressed in a systematic way. During the year we worked hard together to raise awareness in our town and we also held a packed out discussion and film night where we heard from several local women who were courageous enough to share their own stories.
As a result of the overwhelming support for doing more to help those affected by abuse, in all its forms, we are now working together as a Council and charity to try to become “Reducing the Risk’s” first “Torch Bearer” town. In partnership with others, we aim to become a town where domestic abuse, in all its forms, is known about, recognised to be unacceptable, and where help and support is available to all in need.
With our partners we wish to help develop an inclusive and supportive multi-agency network of services which will aim to meet the needs of all domestic abuse victim-survivors, and those of any children, family members, young people or others directly or indirectly affected by such abuse. We will try to provide services which will enable anyone, irrespective of who they are, to know where, and feel confident to seek help.
We are currently working on a charter for this and developing the necessary networks and partnerships such a commitment requires. In 2025 we look forward to presenting our vision and starting work to become a safer and more place to live and act as a beacon for others to follow.
